RFID - Radio Frequency Identification

Were in the last 20 years marked trading units of products (rafts, bundles, packages, single articles) with bar codes, present-day the trend goes explicit in direction of making by means of Electronic Product Code (EPC) and using RFID-technique (Radio Frequency Identification).
Using RFID technique means, that informations are not stored in bar codes, but rather on a microchip namend RFID tag or transponder. Comparable to a CD informations can be stored and read arbitrary often.
Informations are transferred by means of high frequency waves. If meet high frequency waves radiated by a read-write device on one ore more transponder, these send back the informations stored on transponder to read device over an integrated antenna. The writing to transponder takes place according to the same principle. The appropriate selection of read device and antenna enabled informations to receive and to process automatically without the restrictive geometrical requirements of bar code technique.

Why RFID technique?

Key technology of future for unambiguous and contactless marking, coding, identification, saving and authentication of objects (e.g. rafts, bundles, packages, single products)
Realized fast and automatic data acquisition by means of radio waves
Substituted properties of bar code or optical identification of objects
Allows modification of data during their life
Opens new possibilities on field of logistic, material administration, industrie automats, service and identification
Trade chains orient on RFID technique and enforce the marking of products with their suppliers.
Sinking prices for RFID technique enable their economic use.
High rationalization potential for enterprise-comprehensive product tracing for manufacturers an in trade

What is new?

The bar code label is completes by a label with RFID microchip (transponder resp. RFID tag).
RFID technique enables the contactless marking (writing) and identification (reading) of products without visual contact between read-write device and RFID-labeled product by means of high frequency waves.

The advantage

By means of RFID technique can be scanned products marked with a RFID label „in passing“
It is possible to scan many products simultaneously.
Contrary to print of individual bar code label (e.g. EAN 128 with NVENumber) information stored on a RFID tag can by changed problem-free by repeated contactless writing on the tag.

What is to do?

With actual conditions in the company (kind of products, packaging , infrastructure etc.) in mind is to define the optimal characteristic of RFID components and their phasing-in.
The existing ERP and logistic system is to expand with labeling with RFID tags, writing on RFID tags, identification and processing of RFID data within the operational logistic line, e.g. by using RFID subsystem.
